2023 Granjoux Chardonnay

Sold Out

Handpicked on 28 March 2023 and whole-bunch pressed directly to oak, this Chardonnay saw no settling or clarification — a pure expression of site and season. Natural fermentation took place in a mix of one new 300L hogshead and a seasoned 500L puncheon. Malolactic fermentation was intentionally blocked, preserving the wine’s natural acidity and precision. After 12 months in barrel, the new oak component was stirred and transferred to a third-use hogshead, where the entire wine remained on lees for a further four months. The total élevage was 16 months, all in oak. A poised and quietly powerful Chardonnay, the 2023 Granjoux opens with aromas of white nectarine, lemon curd, and mandarin oil, underpinned by layers of flint, cashew husk, and subtle struck match. The nose is tightly focused, with a cool mineral thread hinting at wet granite and crushed quartz — a signature of its Beechworth origins.

On the palate, the wine is coiled and precise yet layered. Bright stone fruits and preserved citrus ride on a fine acid line, with texture built from extended lees contact and gentle bâtonnage. The new oak is seamlessly integrated, offering gentle grip and structure without overt influence. There’s an underlying phenolic tension — a pithy, savoury quality — that adds definition and length. True to its place and philosophy, this is a restrained but confident Chardonnay. It speaks more of stony soils and natural tension than overt richness — though its depth and structure will reward careful cellaring over 6–10 years. Best from 2026 onward.
